to sleep and 20 people will stay to maintain and keep an eye on problems. patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> san jose firefighters were busy this afternoon with a grass fire burning close to homes. started at 12:30 p.m. between south king road and stallion way. flames burned up to back yards and where a radio tower sits. they knocked down the fire within an hour. >>> firefighters in southern california continue to battle a couple of wildfires there. the bigicist the spring fire -- biggest is the spring fire, 6500 acres, threatening hundreds of homes. mobile homes have already been destroyed. evacuations have been orded and another fire in riverside -- orded and another fire in riverside county. the fire is 40% contained. >> reporter: officials completed the last snow survey today. no snow in the regular areas where they conduct the survey. they said the snow pack has a water content of 17%. all of this comes after low amounts of snow in january and february. water officials aren't declaring it a drought yet but if we have a second connective year like this one they might have to do that

have fallen through. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live now in the town of valley springs with more on what we learned at that briefing. jana. >> reporter: julie, let me just tell you that right now they have taken down the roadblocks here on ripin road near her house. sheriff deputies are still here treating leila fowler's house as a crime scene. the yellow crime tape is still up as sheriff deputies keep watch tonight. >> reporter: today investigators were out continuing to search the home of 8-year-old leila fowler for clues. it's been five days since the valley springs girl was stabbed and killed in her own house. deputies reveal they are analyzing knives found inside leila's home. >> we have collected several fives -- knives from the house. we are still examining whether those were the weapons used in the crime. >> reporter: investigators are still interviewing her brother. tonight police say another witness who gave a similar description has now recanted her statements. refused to help a sketch artist and is no longer credible. two other leads have fallen apart. detectives determined

a san jose starbucks is doing business a differently after a poisoning attempt. ktvu's janine de la vega just talked with starbucks' management and has their reaction to a frightening incident. >> reporter: good morning, tori. starbucks tell me, the number one priority is the safety of its customers and its employees. they've removed all of the bottled orange juices from the shelves until further notice. they've also advised other stores to check to make through bottles have not been tampered with. police say the manager of this starbucks on fellville called 911 after a woman acting suspicious. she took two bottles of evolution fresh orange juice from the shelf and swapped them out with the same bottles of orange juice and put them on the sheff. she left the store. the employees smelled the orange juices that she put on the shelf. one had smelled like gas, the other smelled like the chemical tuesdayed in fingernail polish remove. >> i'm so glad they caught this. that's such a weird thing to do. >> reporter: an employee took down the woman's also name and police attacked her to a home fou

we first brought you this morning, ktvu's brian brings us the report this morning. >> reporter: firefighters have made significant progress. this is the scene of the yellow fire. considering california fire won't be significantly staffed until next week, they've made progress, at least with this fire. cal fire crews are busy with dozers throughout the day. here's where we stand right now. the fire at 2:00 this morning was originally two separate fires but merged into one earlier this morning. so far, it's burned about 125 acres. this is along yellow jacket road. according to cal fire, it's about 50% contained and should be fully contained by sometime tomorrow morning. cal fire say the winds came relatively early considering it's not fire season just yet. >> we are about two weeks ahead of schedule with the lack of rainfall that we had this winter. our fuels are much drier than normal times of year. so we plan accordingly to bring on additional staffing a little earlier than normal. >> now, the cause of this fire is currently under investigation and no structures have been damag

going up tonight. we begin with ktvu's maureen naylor. she actually spotted the fire and arrived as the fire crews were arriving. >> reporter: the engines behind me are going to remain here throughout the night sitting on top of a burned area. also earl littler tonight we spoke to some residents who positioned themselves in the line of firearmed with garden hoses. our cameras started when the fire be be -- began with white smoke. the fire started consuming the dry grass. san jose firefighters grabbed their gear and headed into the fire. they were soon dwarfed by this wall of smoke and flames. this family was in the middle of a kung-fu lesson. >> we were told to evacuate suddenly when we saw a huge plume. >> initially we saw a wall. >> it looks kind of like the end of the world to me. >> reporter: the flames threatened mobile homes. >> the flames started coming at you. there's no place to be. so we got the hose, there were 10 of us spraying water. >> reporter: several fires burn here each summer but never this big or this early. >> because of how dry it is. this looked like it was
